Radial Masonry

Curved masonry walls can be accomplished in three ways. If the radius is large enough, by laying conventional masonry units to the radial line. The second method is by having special brick units made by the manufacturer. The third way is by cutting on an angle. The head of the unit to be laid as per the drawings below. Also shown is a graph showing different sizes of masonry units and the approximate smallest radius possible (without cutting) laid up in stack bond; and, if laid up in running bond, the projection overhang. (There is no overhang in stack bond.)

Brick Bonds & Mortar Joints

Motar Joints

Struck Joint:  This is the most simply formed of all joints and is widely used for interior walls.  Its use for exterior work is discouraged, because its weather-resistive qualities are decidedly inferior to other types of joints.

 


Weathered Joint:  A water-shedding, low cost joint, far superior to the Struck Joint.  This joint is formed as a plain cut joint, and finished with the trowel after the mortar has begun to stiffen.  Produces a shadow line which adds to the texture of the wall.

 


Raked Joint:  This type of joint produces a deep shadowline and subordinates the mortar joint.  Very much used on the finer types of face brick
work.  Formed by raking the joint deep and clean.

 


Flush or Plain Cut Joint:  Formed by cutting surplus mortar from the face of the wall.  If a rough texture is desired, the joint must be manipulated with the trowel.

 



VJoint:  Formed with a V-shaped tool
:  This is a very water-tight and satisfactory joint, having a very dense face.

 

 

Concave Joint:  This is perhaps the most satisfactory joint and is formed with a special tool or a bent iron rod.  It is weather-resistive and inexpensive.
